Greenland's contribution to climate change

As you can see Greenland emits almost the least amount of carbon out of these countries. However their main source of carbon emissions comes from liquid fuels. I find it odd that they have no emissions from gas fuels. Liquid fuels are the source of almost all carbon emissions, the only other source of carbon emissions come from bunker fuels which have just started in 2000.

In comparison to the per capita for US citizens at 4.9 metric tons of carbon Greenland's per capita is 3.02. That means compared to the US emissions is 61.6% higher than that of Greenland's emissions per capita. Greenland is ranked 33 out of 215. I am vey surprised, being a country that is made of almost all ice I didn't think there could even be enough people to emit that much carbon into the air. Its ranking is much higher than I thought it would be. US is ranked 12 out of 215. I am not so surprised by this because I know we do emit large amounts of carbon, and I feel that we are beginning to become more aware of what our impact is on the environment.

On the graph above of total carbon emissions you can see that Greenland has one the lowest amount of carbon emissions out of those countries besides Kenya which has the lowest emissions. In 2008 the biggest emitter was a tie between China and the US. China has 233.1% more people than we have here in the US. This may be a reason their carbon emissions are increasing. However this puts Americans more at fault because we have a higher per capita. We have less people than china and we put out almost as much carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The US's total fossil fuel emissions are 94,225,770 thousand metric tons of carbon.  Greenland's total fossil fuel emissions are 7,151 thousand metric tons of carbon. Chinas total fossil fuel emissions are 36,152,061thousand metric tons of carbon. India total fossil fuel emissions are 10,229,326 thousand metric tons of carbon. Italy's total carbon emissions are 5,579,562 thousand metric tons of carbon. Kenya's total fossil fuel emissions are 86,840 thousand metric tons of carbon. The US is responsible for the largest accumulative amount of fossil fuel emissions compared to Greenland, China, India, Italy and Kenya. The US emits 260% more carbon than China, and the US emits 921.1% more carbon than India does. I am surprised by this because I thought developing countries would come closer to the amount of carbon emissions the US puts into the atmosphere.

  1. That's really surprising that Greenland is ranked 33 out of 215. I would never expect Greenland would be that high up because I wouldn't expect enough people to be there emitting enough greenhouse gasses.

  2. I was surprised to see that Greenland still emits a decent amount of Co2 even though they don't have that high of a population. Great post and very organized!

  3. I found it interesting that Greenland emits any emissions at all. Knowing that Greenland is manly covered in ice, I thought that the population would be extremely small, not causing very much CO2 emissions. I am guessing that some of the pollution is from the methane that is being released as the snow melts away, thawing the permafrost, which contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect.
